New Avengers #29 (AvX Tie-In)
Recommendation: “Very Interesting! Pick it up!”
Have you heard of the Illuminati? Marvel’s Illuminati, that is… Well if you haven’t, this issue will be a crash course. If you want a bit more background, go here.
I really liked this issue. I have been following every issue of AVX - all the tie-ins (here are my reviews for the Act II tie-ins). Many of them can be just read and forgotten, but this issue, much like many of the other “New Avengers” tie-ins, was well worth digesting and reading again.
I can easily say that New Avengers #29 and Avengers #28 have been the best AVX tie-ins (and overall issues) in the event to date.
The cover says it all. We finally see some of the greatest minds meet. Sure, they are all under extreme stress. Sure, some of them don’t get along as well as others. And sure, some are a bit more crazy than others… But the simple fact is, this issue was written perfectly, accounting for all these factors.
Some of the main things I loved about this issue:
- Mr. Fantastic has finally been officially introduced into the story-line. If anyone is going to help with a cosmic issue, it is him and the Fantastic Four. Having Thing around to clobber this and that is okay, but we need some real brains supporting this effort.
- Professor X is portrayed perfectly. He is tortured. He is going against his own rules. He feels broken and alone. Defeated. Bravo creative team, bravo.
- Cap. Man, what can I say about Cap. His portrayal here is heartfelt. The “Invaders” flashback really helped set the stage for Cap’s involvement in this issue. Cap’s expectations are clear - unfortunately he expects far too much from everyone…
- Dr. Strange and Tony are represented well. Dr. Strange is as aloof as ever - keeping his priorities straight and sticking to the business at hand… Tony, is more of a distraction. But that is how he is. These were definitely accurate portrayals of these characters in this situation.
I am very interested to see how this meeting may change the course of the event. Likely not at all, as this meeting obviously occurred prior to AVX Round 8, but I can hold out hope. I am continuing to trust that the Fantastic Four will play a bigger role in the concluding issues - we shall see…
